Factory farming lobbyists have added language to the Farm Bill to nullify hard-won laws like California’s Prop 12 that prohibit the extreme confinement of farm animals. It’s critical that we act now to urge our Congressional representatives to support the Luna/Costa amendment to the Farm Bill to protect these humane provisions.

As your constituent, I’m writing to urge you to vote YES on the Luna/Costa amendment to the Farm Bill to protect Prop 12 and oppose “Save Our Bacon Act” language. The Save Our Bacon Act (H.R. 4673) undermines the will of voters and gives factory farm polluters free rein to harm families, farmers, animals, and communities. Please reject this harmful provision and support the Luna/Costa amendment.

The Save Our Bacon Act would directly block enforcement of California’s Proposition 12, which sets basic animal welfare and food safety standards for pork sold or produced in the state. H.R. 4673 undermines the rights of states and the will of voters, jeopardizing public health and animal welfare while punishing farmers who have invested in meeting higher standards.

Eight in 10 American voters, including nearly equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, support bans on cruel confinement being enacted in their own states. In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of California’s Proposition 12, a law addressing animal welfare and public health risks caused by the extreme confinement of animals in factory farms. Congress should listen to the voters and courts, not factory farm lobbyists.

The Save Our Bacon Act and any similar language that harms farmers, families, and communities should be removed from the Farm Bill. Please support the Luna/Costa amendment to the Farm Bill.
